Hydrangeas are not deer resistant. Oakleaf hydrangeas might be the closest to resistant but I still have read posts of people saying their were nibbled on. So basically, less people post about their oakleaf hydrangeas having this trouble than the other hydrangeas (mopheads, lacecaps, paniculatas, etc).

I guess when deer are just hungry, they will eat almost anything. But just do a search in the forum and you will find oodles of people complaining (again, mostly people with the other hydrangeas).

Note too that hydrangeas are deciduous. That means that they do not provide privacy during the winter months.

However, I thought there were some deer resistant arborvitaes? Have you done a search for those on yahoo.com or google.com?

These arborvitae WERE deer resistent, but these deer are ruthless!! They eat whatever they want, except for the time I threw cabbage in the yard for them and they didn't want it. How can a deer be picky? They only like to feast on foods that cost more Han 29cent a pound I guess

I think the term is deer resistant,not deer proof. I have Hydrangea here for over 50 years, and only one year did the deer eat it. No variety was spared, but none was killed. In two years the recovery was complete. Al

Winter in W PA, the deer carefully eat all the live terminal buds off my hydrangea, eat arbor vitae, eat the leaves off or rhodies, eat euonymus, and even strip the bark off of young trees. Ruthless. I treat with Liquid Fence when I can, but often can't get out to spray it with a foot of snow in the yard.

How high are the windows? I have strong deer pressure but one of the few things that have been safe are peegee hydrangeas pruned in tree form. Not particularly tall, but maybe enough to keep them moving on with their heads down?

Hee, hee, hee... Just pictured Bamby jumping up and down trying to reach to nibble on a tree form paniculata. ;o)) Oh, Lord. My dogs would go crazy!
