One benefit to the sphagnum moss is that it can be easily teased out of the new roots without much damage. You'll probably get the best results on woody plants when you are able to prune the old trunk stub immediately below a large root that will eventually encapsulate the wound, get rid of most of the rooting medium, and straighten out the roots before planting.

Thanks for the info - I had been wondering if the moss was simply a moisture reservoir mesh, or might have some intrinsic root-promoting or anti-fungal factors. And thanks for the detail - I had never considered the new-root clean-up to optimize planting.
