Do you have him on a leash when you take him out? Can you get him used to a harness and leash? Cats can learn that this is the way they get to enjoy outdoors - no leash, no outdoors. I had a neighbor recently whose cat loved the leash. Your cat may be at a teachable moment right now. If continue to let him out though without leash, then at some point you go to pick him up to bring him indoors, and he's going to not want to come in and be darting away into the bushes. (Been there done that) Some people put their cats outside on a long lead staked into the ground but you should not do that unless you are there at all times to watch over - a cat in that situation is very vulnerable.

I also have a Manx......great cat breed! I would also suggest a harness and leash as long as you're always with him. The other option, and I don't see why the landlord would not allow it, is to get a kennel. It's better than building something since you can break it down and take it with you when you move.
My cat is an indoor cat and I have to watch her when I open the front door, but she has total access to her outdoor kennel on the back deck. I'm considering connecting another smaller kennel that will allow her to lay on the grass. For now, I buy a section of sod and place that in her kennel. She loves sleeping on it on hot days.

Thank you......it's been great to have and keeps my cat very happy! I bought the kennel thru a local feed store but check out online suppliers and also Costco (I see them there once a year) for the best prices. Several places will ship free. Also check Craigslist since people are often selling dog kennels. Just be sure to make or buy a top for it since a cat can easily climb right out.
Never had a problem with fleas and I haven't given her a treatment in 3 years. Ground squirrels sometimes run across the deck and a couple of time a neighbors cat wandered over, but since I don't have fleas in my yard (and my dog doesn't have them) there's little to no chance of her getting any. I do make sure she gets a rabies shot though.........we have bats and I never know what she may encounter when she's out there at night. Mostly, it's been moths that she chases and brings in!

Most cats like to go outside but many places where people live its not safe at all, roads and dogs and wild animals and all kinds of things.
You can rig up something with fencing, I have seen where they do this cat runs that go along the lawn but the cat is completely inside and safe too from anything. They do need grass for their digestion, they need it, dogs too, they can throw up all that stuff and clean themselves out. Cats get hair balls they need to get rid of.I have seen owners with cats on leashes to keep them safe but today its not safe with so many dogs going at each other and suddenly pop out and you may not be able to grab your cat fast enough or keep it from the dog that comes at you. There is so many dangers out there today.
