Need help for Great Room Wall

It is kind of hard to see in this picture but we ran into a problem with the landing and the stairs going to the upper level protruding below the height of the ceiling in the Great Room below it. (Area where the wide piece of wood is) Since it was not centered and we are not putting in a fireplace we decided to encase the area and extend it to both side walls creating a kind of soffit. Now we need to do something with that wall. thinking built-in wall unit but not sure how to tie it to the rest of the room. There will be a crown moulding around the entire room so wondering if it should be on the ceiling of this wall as well? Or, do we create some kind of panels across the top that match the wall unit instead? Maybe a combination of the two? Since this area is a focal point and visible the minute you enter the home I want something that looks purposeful rather than as a "fix" for a problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

what function would the built in serve?

We would have a TV there - either sitting on a cabinet base or hung on the wall. Other than that maybe some storage in base cabinets some books and things on shelves although filling those shelves with things that look good can get pretty expensive.

ok then they will totally work and look like it was all part of the pan. in soffit you can add to can lights to the L / R of tv shining down onto the shelves.....im sure you have some books and photos, and memories you can put in there. they dont need to be overt stuffed.

I'd drywall it and consider adding shelves later, once I have my furniture planned out. Things look very different once the rooms are finished.

I think we have a similar layout and we put in a large built in tv unit on this wall. Of course you can do this later, but more cost effective to do it during construction.

Barbara Almandarz we are at the point right now where we are trying to decide whether to wait until later since I am having trouble coming up with a design.

Flair Lighting do you think it would work to put lights in the soffit and just have the crown moulding on the soffit front with just a low cabinet (like a built in credenza) below and maybe the TV on the wall?

yes, similar to the above picture but more one level across the bottom, and lights in the soffit to shine down. would look custom !
