I have a a/c unit that was ten years old and the capacitor to the fan on the compressor blew causing the compressor to run and overheat. I was told all freeon in unit had burnt up and compressor. Needed a complete new unit as this one was a r 22. also I had a kick start put on both of my compressors and have the capacitors blew three times to different parts of the compressors.

My question is why is there not a safety device that would shut off compressor if fan was not running to cool it down?
