What kind of lighting would work best for stairs to a finished attic? Hanging lantern/chandelier, or sconces?

We are finishing our attic into two bedrooms and a bathroom. I planned to hang a lantern in the stairway, but contractor is now suggesting sconces. It is a little awkward to figure out best placement for a hanging light. Anyone have thoughts/suggestions?

We'd love to see the stairwell to give the best advice. Can you post a picture? Meanwhile, be sure the contractor just doesn't happen to have leftover sconces from another job and is trying to get you to take them off his hands. Don't install what you don't love!
