Ok!!
So I went to the plant sale at the local nursery ( on Tryon Rd.), I am not sure about naming them) .

I found A pomegranate ( the Russian variety, Salavatski, Thanks John !!! , Paw paws, and Figs.

I understand, you need 2 different types ( varieties/ cultivars etc.) of Paw paws to make good fruits. The plant labels just read paw- paw. I spoke to the nursery guy about this. He said these are seed grown and hence genetically different. They are cross pollinated, so makes sense to me). I got 2 of them. Yay!!! ]

Now comes the hard task of getting them in the ground and putting a fence around them!!!

So far the Salavatzki is the only Pomegranite of mine to sprout after this past winter.

My pawpaws are all seedlings and they pollinate each other and I have a wild one up near the house and it has started to bloom this year so it may be adding to the mix.

Yes!! One the paw paws has flowers on it already. They looks like fluted cups. Very pretty, I will try to upload a picture of it soon.

The pomegranate ( I am glad I picked the right one) is all sticks and teensy buds, barely visible.... Hope it starts looking green soon!!!.

I am thinking you are trying to complete the planting in the garden, You did mention April being busy.

I have a couple of paw paws. They have had flowers for several years but no fruit so far. My provider: Winn Dinson of Full of Life Farms here in Chatham Co. gave a demo of paw paw fruit last year and reminded me that paw paws are usually pollinated by flies (I guess the flowers have a slight rotten smell). He puts old meat around or in his trees to draw the flies. I am doing that now but so far haven't noticed many flies.

Am I being Over reactive?

One of my paw paw plants has flowers and the other nothing much except a couple of leaves.. I mean how am I gonna marry these 2? Will they bloom at the same time next year?

If not, I will have to look for pollen ...Like placing an ad " Wanted!! Paw paw pollen, please contact........... Will offer pollen in exchange.. " ideas anyone?

I am serious.. How do paw paw owners do this do when you have only 2 trees one earlier than the other?

I don't understand the theory, but I can point out that one of my paw paw trees grew poorly and to the extent that it flowered, they were after the other one had finished flowering. It is still growing less well than the other, but now it does have a few flowers at the same time although they still started a few days later.

Yea!! I Hope someone pipes in... I would need help from all Paw paw owners here in Raleigh.

I am just trying to get all my bases covered Before the baby starts exploding flowers. :-)

I don't know the specifics but I will tell you that hand pollinating pawpaws is difficult. The flowers switch sex, they start out female (they are almost closed up) then after a while they switch to male (they are open and fuller). The pollen is only viable for a few hours in the middle of the day. It all depends on the weather. Getting the timing to work is frustrating. As long as your yard is not sterile you will have all the flies and midges that like the stinky smell of these flowers and the flowers will get fertilized. It takes a couple of years for the trees to get big enough to support the weight of the fruit - until then, they may flower but they rarely fruit. Getting your trees to bloom at the same time is part of the problem and its the same problem with many plants that require cross pollination.

Well I have 2 years more to wait for the busy bees, errr flies, I mean.

I read and fretted over my pawpaw trees but in the end they bloom heavy and set a ton of fruit without any help from me. I think the trees have to be in the ground for a number of years and get to a certain size in order to really get busy making fruit. They will bloom in a pot and you might get a few fruits in a pot - but after they get planted in the ground and get over head high they really crank up the blooming and fruiting. I keep a thick layer of rotting leaves under my trees and I think that keeps all the necessary insects happy. That layer of leaves comes in handy when the fruit start to ripen, they have more flavor if you wait until they fall off the tree.

My tress are about 6 ft tall. still in a pot.

I am waiting for the holes to be dug for all the fruit trees.

We ( my husband and I) seem to have differing ideas on where to place them. I keep telling him, to make a fence first ( Deer!!!!) for the fruit trees.

It helps to know I need not worry too much, not yet, anyway !

I am looking for jujube(shanxi Li). where did you find the jujube's? is it in charlotte Farmers market?

I have few jujubes, Li , Honey jar, sugar cane and So varieties. Last year I had fruit on Li and honey jar. Honey jar is nice. I didn't like Li somuch. Now I am looking for Shanxi Li jujube.

I have pomegranates, wonderful and angle red. I got them from willis orchards. wonderful is doing good. I planted in the ground and it survived this winter. Angle red died and I have got another plant, Even its not doing good. May be I will get one from the local growers.

I have got kiwis (anna and Hayward) this year. They are in gallon pots. I need to find the perfect spot for them.

I do grow mainly veggies, and now venturing into fruits.

I do not have the jujube plants, just the russian pomegranate and paw paws . I am still looking for jujubes. Someone mentioned they are usually available in fall. I will post if i see for sure!!!

I live in charlotte. I can't come to Raleigh. You can sure visit us. We planning to move to new house in next Jan. That's why I didn't plant my Kiwis in ground. Jujubes are in ground in our current house.

I do grow all kinds of veggies too. I have more than 15 different Jasminum varieties and few other tropical plants.

Farmer's Market person is in Charlotte or Raleigh? If the guy is in Raleigh can you find what are all the varieties of jujubes he has and the sources of them?

If he is in charlotte, Can you tell me where in the farmers market he is?

I have seen the same picture on the web somewhere.

When I go back to the Raleigh Farmers market and he is there, I will ask him if he does carry the jujube " Shanxi Li " and all those plants too or just a few.... I recall him telling me about the "Li " cultivar... last fall.

I would love to know which is the sweet jujube and which one is your favorite.

Growing up in the south with long hair, I loved making a long garland of all these jasmines with kanakamra and wearing it my hair. Thank you so much for posting this. I do not know which would be my favorite, I think all!!!!
