Metal folding baker's racks or bookshelves with the sides opened out and with the shelves folded flat against the back work well. I use rebar and either wire concrete ties or black plastic zip ties to anchor them to the ground. I've also made tripods with rebar and either hose clamps or wire or zip ties to hold them together at the top and then crowned with whatever fun thing I can find as a finial. I make a spiral of heavy wire or light cable up the tripod for the clematis to grow up.

When the insane manager of our co-op complex told me my beautiful new black wrought-iron trellis had to go because "it might blow into the building in a storm", I narrowed my eyes in disgust and thought of a good revenge. I bought styrofoam swim noodles in a color to complement my Nelly Moser clematis. I sunk two 4' sturdy bamboo rods into the ground about 24" apart. I slipped 2 hollow-core swim noodles over these rods and used plastic needlepoint canvas to make sleeves to join a third swim noodle, which I arched, to the 2 swim noodles over the bamboo rods, resulting in a swim noodle arch. I then used nylon cable ties to attached some trellis netting tautly between the 2 upright noodles. Voila! A very lightweight yet supportive trellis the co-op manager could not fault for putting the building at risk. He was steamed at being thwarted, but could say nothing, as the garden obviously improved the look of the property immensely.

You can set up bamboo sticks vertically. You can get bamboo pretty cheaply or free. From there, either attach ready-made trellis netting or string your own.

I have also seen some trellis ideas made from PVC pipe or electrical conduit pipe. About $15 or less for some pretty sturdy support. From there, attach a ready-made trellis netting or string your own.
