How/would you update the back/backyard/deck?

The first door on the left is a door to the kitchen, the second door (not pictured, but beneath the second awning on the left) leads to formal dining room, towards the bottom of the picture (off picture) is a 10 by 10 yard behind the garage/mother-in-law suite. Overall, like the area and hoping to diy for initial improvements (pressure wash, maybe pull up the wood patio) and landscaping initially. Later, may make further updates. The part that I like least is the space to the left. Pool feels very close to the pool out the dining room door and not sure about the wood deck. Also, curious whether any thoughts/ideas on updating the surface of pool deck.

You might consider changing out the dining room door for a large stationary window, which would make the close proximity of the pool less of a hazard.

Looks like you live somewhere warm and tropical, have you considered a white washed cement to match the white home? Also extend the pool deck into the grassy strip- it would be a perfect place for a grouping of lounge chairs.

Search Ferris Land Design-Richard Hymel Landscape Architect on Houzz for lots of pictures of pools and decking. He designed our backyard and did an incredible job. Your pool is beautiful but you may get some great ideas on different types of decking.

For the pool deck, are you able to get rid of those occasional stripes of that run through the cement?

If you completely redo the pool surround at some point, I think it would look nice to round off those angular corners where the pool changes shape.

Is the metal railing next to the pool necessary? We have one of those with our pool, but only put it in when my dad comes over occasionally because he's the only one who needs the railing to get in and out of the pool.
