Can you post a photo of the plant, both of the whole plant and a close-up of the plant's stem and/or leaves? What kind of sun is there? Clematis need a minimum of 3 or 4 hours of good light to bloom well, and most like more than that.

If it is growing against a chimney without a trellis, you may well have something other than a clematis since they need narrow bars of some kind to wrap their leaf stems around.

I am unable to send photo at this time as I am currently wintering in FL. The vine gets full sun most of the day and it is on a trellis in front of the chimney. Soil is rich and well drained. Since you winter in FL, is there a chance that some years it might have already flowered by the time you return to MA? I have a fair number that bloom in May, and I am behind you weather-wise, though most won't have flowered by mid-April in your area. It sounds like your spot, with good sun and good soil should be ideal for it.

I'm interested to see it also, including the possibility that it is not a clematis. There are possible perennial vines that grew up nearby, or the plant you got was not a clematis. We've read about many cases of people getting another plant from what they thought.
