Knock down the wall?

Hi just trying to decide what to do with this wall. We are installing granite countertops and before having the slabs cut figuring out if we should knock it down or keep it.

If we keep it we would change the current backsplash, but not sure to what.

If it goes, the couch in front goes.

The colors on the walls came with the house and will not be staying in either case.

Thoughts?!?

If it stays, I find the cabinets infront with the oven very deep. That would probably frustrate me. It would be hard to keep that area behind the stove clean.
If it goes and you keep the current layout with the oven, I think you need a deeper island so there is more space behind the stove. That would elminate the need for that backsplash.
If it were me I would open it up.

Also does that beam run the length and is just hidden by the wall. That's something you need to consider when you are thinking about taking it out. Do you have the proper structure in place already.

Sorry, I have another question... Is that an over the range microwave on the far wall?

HI -- I am not so sure I like what you have done so far . If you re-move that wall , then that chimney will be hanging from the middle of the room . The micro wave is one for over a stove and now looks odd where it is now . I also don't like the little rounded end on that cooking counter . I think you should have planed better before you started . What is being done now with backsplashes is having the same as the counter tops or matching in materials or color . I think some re-thinking is needed before getting expensive counter tops etc. I think you were not taking that whole room ,kitchen and living room into consideration before you started this re-model . Just being truthful as a former kitchen designer .

@littlemonkey: that is an over range microwave.

@lefty: we just took off the existing counter top because the former owners had tile on it... We wanted to see what was underneath. The plywood is there temporarily.

The previous owners put up the wall, the wanted separation between the living area and the kitchen. Structurally that wall can come down. Nothing has been cut yet, we have 2 slabs of granite so there is definitely time/room for improvement.

@lefty the backsplash that is currently there, was already there... Meaning it is coming down.

If the wall is kept there will be something done to that wall... Just not sure what.

One last thing... The beam is not on the wall that is coming down, it is right above the section of the wall that would come down.

The wall should go. Backsplash should be a color from granite. Paint whole area a dove gray. Work from that.

One thing to consider if you take the wall down. How tidy are you in the kitchen? Personally, we need to keep our kitchen a little out of sight. My husband is a great chef, but not so great at keeping the stuff put up and out of sight.

Just throwing that thought out for consideration.

Where would the couch go if the wall is removed? I like the open plan kitchen but I also don't like looking at my kitchen cabinets from the living room. I would probably do a 3/4 wall.
