Arne - Please don't paint the wooden floors. You can still have French country with the floors natural. Can you match the existing wood? At least for the kitchen. Maybe check in the attic for matching wood? You could whitewash the brick.

Are these the previous owners furnishings or yours? The floors are beautiful as they are. I would use them to act as the basis for the French country style you want.

If you want the other floors to match, contact a good local hardwood flooring store. They can look at it and explain your options. There is no way a vinyl tile or sheet vinyl is going to match the wood flooring you have. You could pick something complementary when you replace the carpet and tile that is there now. There are many, many stone-look ceramic tiles that would imitate the look of a centuries-old stone floor. There are also sheet vinyl patterns that look sort of like old stone but are much easier to clean than ceramic tile or real stone.

Where are you located? There may be reclaimed Oregon flooring if that was popular in your area. Apple Pie's suggestion for ceramic tile is good. Here's a pic of wood look ceramic tile. This is from my idea book so it doesn't match yours. But there are others that would look good with your wood. Just to give you the idea.
