Soil marking for rows

Winter hangs on here in New England, so I'm trying to seed yellow onions in the house vs planting sets in the garden. To best see the spacing of my seeds, can I mix the seed with sand or flour or some other "blonder" component when planting my onion seeds in flats.

I've already broadcast seeded bunching onions in small flats, which worked out fine, as I intend to transplant in the garden in chunks. For the yellow onions, I'd like a little wider spacing in seeding (to aid in transplanting). Hoping someone can give me some tips.
