Kitchen Workstation Dilemma!!

We are remodeling some of our kitchen and I am lost at what to do for this workstation! We are redoing our back splash, tiling the floor, repainting, and updating the cabinet hardware. I can't decide if we should put some back splash by the desk area, just take down the cork (the entire wall is cork), and perhaps some shelving? Can't seem to find a picture of anything that would work for us. As you can probably tell, we have 3 children, and I would love for this area to functional as well (and not just the place to throw everything that it is now!!)

What do you guys think about a mudroom bench area instead? Our biggest complaint about this house is that we don't have an area for shoes and coats when you walk in the door...

If you have a small kitchen and space elsewhere for a workstation, how about replacing the too-small desk and worktop with storage, such as either a pantry or stock base and wall cabinets and countertop turned into a coffee/microwave area? It really isn't large enough to be practical for the three.

I can understand a need in the kitchen for your children to do homework or use a PC while you are in the space to help them. Do you have an island with a space for counter stools? That would be a much more practical space for them to use & should be cleared off when they are through using it. I agree the space where your desk is now can be better utilized as storage such as a full length counter depth pantry as soozoo1 suggested. You could paint the door to the pantry with blackboard paint for schedules for the kids sports activities with different colored chalks.

We actually have a pretty large kitchen with walk-in pantry area. I was wanting to get away from replacing or adding cabinets, as ours were custom built about 20 years ago, so they wouldn't match! :(

Oh, I love the idea of the doors painted with chalkboard paint. Yes, we actually have an island, and that is currently where they do their homework!

My parents had a similar dilemma in their kitchen and what they did worked really well. They found a desk that fit the size space and had it painted to match the cabinets (a good painter can match just about anything). They also had a few pieces of trim installed to make the whole area look built-in. They installed open cubby-style shelving above, again painting to match. This took away the need to match the actual cabinet door fronts, and is a very functional space. They are super organized, so they don't mind the open shelves, but I would stick baskets or something in the cubbies to tame the clutter

That sounds like a very practical idea for your family. Shoes could tuck under the bench and then add a wooden rail painted to match above with hooks for coats and back packs. A bulletin board framed and finished to match could go on the side wall to keep your calendars and schedules handy.
