I'm not sure, but Salvia regeliana may have been redefined as a form or identical to S. virgata. I've grown booth from Index Seminum from European sources, and they seemed a lot alike to me.

They are full sun plants that should like limestone soils, as long as there is some humus. More importantly, they are Mediterranean plants from alpine or plateau areas, and won't like hot humid nights. I'd plant them in a raised bed with some shade, and occasionally thin out the congestion of dead or weak foliage at the base of these rosette-forming plants. If you can grow the related meadow sages S. nemerosa, S. superba, S. pratensis, etc., you will understand its needs.

I am not good at the S. nemerosa group as a whole. A friend does have success with these not far from here but he is lower in altitude closer to the urban heat bubble with a thin layer of calcarious clay over his marl but still Edwards plateau. I bet he irrigates more than me. I had read that it was a Turkish sage. Turkey is a very big country with a lot of variation. I have enough seedlings to give it a scattergun of placements to see who strikes gold and who strikes out.
