Pruning Clematis?

Hey everyone! Last year I bought a Clematis (not sure exactly what kind) but it had purple flowers on it if that helps lol. Anyhow, I transplanted it outside back in early September. I noticed recently that it's really greening up and is getting bulbs on it. But, there's alot of stem above those that aren't getting bulbs. I'm assuming since I have never pruned it that maybe it's just dead stems? I read on some website earlier today that they need to be pruned but I guess when to do so depends on the group that it's in, 1, 2 or 3. I'm assuming I have an early bloomer so should I prune it back now to 5 inches above the ground or should I just wait until the end of the growing season and do it then? I'm quite confused. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
