pruning Calliandra

I have a very tall and large Calliandra haematocephala that I want to cut back. It's been in the ground about 5 years and is crowding a young tangerine tree. I realize I've planted things too close together, but I had no idea the powderpuff would be a giant!

I'd like to cut the powderpuff back to 3 feet tall or so but maybe it would be better if I cut it almost to the ground and let it start over? Some branches are over 3 inches in diameter.

If I had known better, I might have tried to grow it like the plant in this photo: powderpuff tree

Thanks for any advice.

Marcia
