Living room seems very sharp! Agree that a rug with more life -- color, pattern, whatever -- would finish that well. Dining room feels a little pale because the dining set is so.. pale against all the darker wood, black frames, and so forth. Perhaps a dark patterned runner would help tie it in better?

For a rug, perhaps something that will tie in to the blue in your curtains? These are from Crate and Barrel.

Thanks for the rug suggestions, Avery! I actually really love that one with the circular pattern, and I think it would tie in with the various beige/grey/blue tones.

Thanks for the comments, lefty45. I agree with you that CDs/DVDs are not decor! Unfortunately, my husband is big collector of soon-to-be (or already) obsolete media, so to keep the peace in my household that item will be staying :( (It was supposed to go in the basement, but the ceilings are too low)

What colour would you suggest for the walls? The room is a bit dark (being north-facing), so I want to keep the walls light/bright.

A couple of placement tweaks...I would consider removing the table that is crowding the fireplace, and centering the three pics over the tv.

You have lots of art, etc on the walls but some of it is not hung correctly. Pieces hanging alone should have their center point 5' above the floor. When hanging above furniture, the bottom frame should be 5" above the piece. I'd clear the TV wall of all but the TV and then paint the wall an accent color. Is that a FP in the corner of the first picture? It looks like the end table is covering it If that's a FP, I'd rather see the TV and sofa reversed so one wall becomes your focal point. Then center the love under the window. Is your buffet in the dining solid to the floor or does it stand up on legs like a hung table? If open beneath for the vent to function, I'd move it under the two pictures and then lower them as per directions above.
