Smaller one looks maybe like 'Futura Simplex'. All of these are cultivars/selections of Sansevieria trifasciata. There are many many cultivars of trifasciata in all sizes, colors, and color combinations. The species itself is rather tall and narrow. 'laurentii' is a common variation with the yellow edging on its leaves. 'Whitney' is a newer cultivar but it is easy to grow and seems to be "appearing" all over in the last two years or so. All the Futura types are nice as they don't get as large regular trifasciata (although they are not as small as the Hahni types. Enjoy your Sans!

We occasionally get a little splitting and dried tips. It may be too much sun, not enough water, too much water, and/or rough handling of some kind. You may have to alter its placement and/or alter your watering to see whether it gets better or worse. I water ours whenever the soil starts to look and feel dry and dusty. There's no way to know how often that will happen with any given plant - it depends on many factors. You gave to just check the soil with your hands once a week or so to see if it's getting dry.

Also, the air in our homes is so much drier than that of their natural habitat which can cause cracking and splitting as well as being under watered. I use cactus/succulent potting mix mixed with sand (not playbox sand) or crushed lava rock because it helps drain the water quickly and being a succulent, fast draining is very important.
