Beverage Station appliances

We are building a new house and I am doing a kitchen with my dream appliances. I need help with decisions on two other areas - a butler's pantry near the kitchen, where I'd like to direct drink traffic for my 5 kids and guests - and a basement bar/man cave which will primarily be used on weekends only.

I need an undercounter beverage center or fridge for the Butler's pantry for canned drinks, and undercounter refrigeration for the basement to hold beer and canned drinks. I am planning on putting an icemaker in the Butler's pantry. Also, I need something for ice in the basement, but I don't think an icemaker is the solution since it won't get daily use.

For the Butler's pantry, my appliance salesman has quoted me the glass front Sub Zero beverage center, and for the basement, a stainless front one. Has anyone had success with the lower budget beer coolers such as Danby and Edgestar? Gut tells me to stay away but the prices seem so enticing. Then I could maybe get the Scotsman icemaker that makes the "Sonic" ice! On the other hand, this is our dream house and it is worth it to me to spend more money now if I know I will be happy with the product. I know a lot of people say "boo" to Subzero here - but any alternatives (that are not MORE expensive)? Or does anyone LOVE their Subzero beverage center so that I can get comfortable with the purchase? I see a lot of good reviews about TRUE, though the pricing seems about the same.

Anyone do this recently? So thankful for any help.

I just got rid of my Scotsman ice maker. I wasn't interested in the "perfect" ice cube. They are slow. They require a drain and filter. The Scotsman is an icemaker and icebox. There is no freezer or refrigeration component to the unit. Keeping the drain clean is a nightmare and requires constant maintenance. Whatever you decide, I guarantee you will have more trouble with the ice maker than any other appliance in your home.

I have a glass front Marvel under cabinet bar cabinet refrigerator along with their wine storage unit. It came in a stackable configuration. I had space constraints that drove this decision. I do not like the shelving arrangement in the refrigerator. I wouldn't recommend it in a house with children. I don't think it will take the wear and tear.

There is nothing special about the Subzero other than the price. You don't need to spend the money downstairs. Kitchenaid comes to mind for the downstairs arrangement. It's a toss up upstairs. The Subzero will take the wear of a constantly busy household. I'd would consider them upstairs.

If it comes down to budget, this area will be the first one to be cut. Many of the "lesser" brands will prove reliable. Just don't go too cheap.

Thank you home chef, especially the recommendation for the SZ in the Butler's Pantry.

I think my ideal basement set up would be a refrig/freezer drawer combo, or just a freezer drawer next to a beverage center. I would fill the refrigerator drawer with beer bottles and the bottom with ice. But the $4000+ for the Subzero model is not happening. I am having a hard time comparing GE/Electrolux/Fisher Paykel and their pricing online. Anyone else have experience with a drawer unit in a bar situation? This will be my husband's bar that opens out to the patio/pool area, and open in the walk out basement to the man cave/family movie/game room. I want this to be easy for entertaining set up because my husband is a pretty impatient guy.

The refrigerator drawer units from most of the major brands run around $2500-$3k. Subzero would be $4k+ but they do offer larger sizes (27",30" or 36"). GE Monogram, Marvel, U-Line ETC would fall into that range.

We sell a lot of clear ice machines, but be aware that they require upkeep. You must clean them regularly and many have water filters built in that require occasional replacement.

Ultimately, if you are ok with Sub-Zero money, than buy a True. Simply cant compare the build quality. If you want to save money, Scotsman is pretty good for the money on the icemaker side (keeping in mind that all icemakers require regular maintenance, and are less reliable than most other appliances!). Marvel is a good alternative for a drawer. Good capacity, the new units seems to have improved their noise level, and we have lots of happy customers with them for many years.
