Hydrangeas under mature trees

I'm on a lot with mature trees in Northern VA. We are on a slope and next to a lake. But my reading suggests that Hydrangeas need a lot of water, even when mature. The landscaper has recommended macrophylla; if I can have them I'd like aspera and quercifolia as well. Any ideas?

Hi Carol. In very general terms, I'd rate quercifolia as most drought-tolerant, but that's within the context that hydrangeas are just not very drought-tolerant! Shade will help you though. I'd add too that 'Annabelle', the old arborescens variety, seems to come through here regardless what weather gets thrown at it.
