mix barstools? - backless and no back?

Hi,
We just finished our kitchen and we're in disagreement about barstools. We thought maybe we could compromise and mix - my husband wants backless stools so the stools don't block the access to the bar when we have friends gathered but not sitting at the bar. I think stools with backs are more comfortable. Is it "ok" to mix the two - if we did stools with backs along the longer side of the bar and stools without backs along the shorter end?

I might select stools that have low backs - comfort with having a back but not large enough to get in the way and an industrial/farmhouse look might be nice.

the dimensions are 61" (long side) and 49" (short side). thanks so much for suggestions!

You're right, stools with backs are more comfortable. But sadly, they would really close off the space. Mixing would be too cluttered. So... Have to vote backless. At least make the seats cushioned for comfort.

If that's bar height instead of counter height, I have to say something with a back. They are available with backs roughly equal to the height of the bar. Safer and more comfortable. Appearance is important, but function is more important.

The reality is that everyone gathers in the kitchen with you as you're prepping, I would go for function and get the stools with backs as you will have all of your people gathered at that island, you want to provide a comfortable seat.
