Please help with my Dwarf Gardenia - Not sure what they need

I have included pictures of my healthy ones, (4) and I have three that
seems to be turning brown and losing all of its leaves, it started with
the first one, second one I tried cutting back all the leaves that
died/fell off, nd has moved to number 3, what do they need?

(I have 4 semi healthy ones - a little yellowing)

these are the three that leaves are falling off and not growing back but
the plant is not dead, just no new leaves growing - they turn brown and
fall off never to return

Please help

Looks like a new sidewalk which may be leaching lime. Gardenias need an acid soil. Does water run off into that corner?

Please let us know where you live. It was a tough year for gardenias in some regions.

Would add that apparently loropetalum does not look damaged from cold behind it?

I live in Raleigh, NC.. the funny thing is that I have 4 really healthy ones in a row and these three a couple of inches away that is really having trouble. My loropetalum's are doing well actually; I trimmed them back to soon and so the top of them are not as 'pretty' as I would like, but I know they will grow back out. Any ideas about these 3 gardenias, are they diseased and I just need to pull them up, count my loses?

They look fairly newly planted. Are they? If so, they didn't get a chance to establish before this winter from hell.

No I closed on my home 2/2014 and the house was built in 2013 they had a year of establishment and they did well last year 2014, they bloomed. This started later in the year before the harsh winter.

somehow.. i suspect that sidewalk is part of the problem ... these plants.. properly sited.. probably should have been planted 2 or 3 feet from such ...

i like to say.. get them dormant.. and keep them dormant.. thru winter ..

a large heat sink.. like the cement.. can repeatedly thaw the soil.. and if the roots keep going in and out of dormancy.. during winter.. sooner or later.. stuff happens ...

is the walkway in full sun.. all day ..???

finally.. any use of salt or ice remover.. due to some bizarre NC winter event???? .. how bad was your winter???? .. compared to other years????
