I have my plants on a porch as well. They get maybe 3 to 4 hours of sun at most. I feel that my plants take longer to bloom than others. Once they reach a certain age though, they seem to bloom just fine.

I know that some of my plants can take more sun than others but I haven't kept any other than new or newly rooted on the covered patio for extended time. If they don't get enough sun I worry they would get really lanky (and my patio isn't big enough), have you seen that with any of your plants?

I don't notice that mine grow different than what their genetics have determined but I suppose if they don't flower than they may not branch as well. That is a consideration but most of mine look fine. Fertilizer helps to push them to flower as well.

Funny, I wonder this sometimes, too. There are definitely differences in how various plumerias respond to sun, especially when you take into account the strength of sun in different parts of the country.

I keep several more sensitive plants, reds mostly, in semi-sun under a lightly-leafed oak tree. And I often see photos of plumies blooming happily in the ground under large trees.

Growers who have hundreds of varieties will tell you that some can't take too much sun, or will under-perform in too much intense heat. Any plumeria can certainly sunburn badly in direct sun. For Texas and Arizona, more arid parts of So Cal, that's a valid concern.

Hello, due to the variety of cultivars some fenotypes may respond differently to any given condition , but primordial reponse to factors such as sun exposure , soil requirments etc, are likely to stay stable( in others species like tomatoes or any " agricultural specie" this factors among others ,like fungus resistance, fruit production are actually the ones modificated by human selection during centuries of intervention, not the case of plumeria).

The natural habitat of this plant are clear volcanic hills with very intense sun radiation, the modifications in the pursue of different flower colours may have affected but in a tangencial way, so it is just an intuition but I think the more you emulate the natural condition the best.

Another thing is , flowers are the reproductive organs so under certain conditions perceived by the plant as a threat , the response of sending the available energy to reproduction is a typical strategy .
