I would like to get the lights so that I am ready to go when the contractors are here. Otherwise it will cost me more to have them come back again.

As for cheap lights not lasting - nothing lasts on the water. That is why I don't want to put a lot of $$ into it. I've spoken to many friends around here and their ceiling fans and exterior lights never hold up for the long term - even if they spend a lot on them.

also there is not much nautical about your house, wrought iron rails, faux rock pool. i would go, and this will be the cheapest, with simple lights like this across the back. in a modern still to fit the interior. up down lights, some just down. and on the front this left image is a Murray fiess fixture.

I agree. We are slowly going to be changing the exterior of this house (including rails and pool deck) to lean more modern. I like these ideas, but it doesn't look like the up/down lights would work well given the position of my lights on the house.... would they? Seems like all of my lights right now are more ambient lights. Would this type of lighting not give enough light surrounding the pool deck?

Oh, I think I get it now. Where the really large wall lights are (flanking the angular windows), I would do the up downs? Then the others I would just do downlights? I love this idea! I would've never come up with that on my own. As for the front lights, I'll check them out. Thanks, again!

yes simple, sleek, and do not need to be huge. under the patio and by the upper deck i would do just down. and by the windows up down for drama!

they come square and round. you can get led bulbs to put in them.

do you have a the makes and models of ones you like? i don't trust myself and feel like i will screw this up! this seems to be a really creative way of solving my lighting problem. i really appreciate it!

hi Robin, I came across your post from a year ago when you were looking to build. I am too in SW Florida and about to start building on a canal. I would love to hear how you came along from a year ago...... I am in Naples..

We ended up not building because of lack of good lots for money. Decided to do a remodel instead. The house we bought had amazingly close proximity to open water on the canals (4 minutes). The remodel was a challenge and it is not over yet. We did make it pretty modern, though. Took about 8 months so far - it is slow going here in Punta Gorda with any type of remodel.

We changed the layout of the home, got rid of ugly soffits, raised ceilings, put in unfinished engineered rift and quartered white oak floors (had them finished onsite), floating vanities, new rift cut white oak doors, large format Porcelanosa tile in all bathrooms, modern kitchen with glossy white cabinets and white quartz (took 4 slabs just for the kitchen!), glass stair rail system, etc etc. unfortunately I don't have any good pics of the finished product because we are still in boxes!
