Fireplace Re-do

I'm going to have to remove some of the flagstone on my fireplace so that some wood rot can be repaired beneath it. Here's my dilemma. I'm not crazy about the fireplace. I think it's too much for the small room. Now is my chance to do something different. I've posted some additional pics of a fireplace I saw here on Houzz that I really like, the room from another angle and a pic of the outside of my home (so I pick a look that will go with the house). Note that I have 8 foot ceilings. Thanks in advance for your suggestions and advice. Lori

Here is an alternative to an arched wall. It defines the space but is more open and still has the arch feature you like. Just a thought. One has shelves for storage too! You could put base as cabinets.

Here's another angle of the room. I'm also considering separating the living and dining areas with a archway. Also an exterior pick of the home to get the overall look and a fireplace look that I like.

Going vertical with the fireplace would be a great choice as it will break up the horizontal lines of the space.

Where is the dining room? Great choice for the fireplace. Where will you put the TV?

The dining room is to the right of the living room (where the cornices are). The two rooms and the kitchen are totally open with little to no room definition. That is why I am thinking about bringing the half wall to the right of the fireplace to ceiling height and then building an archway. I hope to position the TV next to the new fireplace on the new shelving. I do not like the look of a TV over a fireplace.

The FP that is your inspiration, the only part I have reservations on is how the thickness of the mantle is carried over to the shelves, but other than that it is very nice. The FP you have is really nice but it does overwhelm the room. Is the arch repeated anywhere else in the house? I like it, just wondering. Your porch is wonderful!

Thank you for your suggestions! I do have one other archway in the master bedroom. I think another good thing about the new fireplace is that I can reuse the flagstone from my existing fireplace. By doing so it will still match up to the stone on the outside chimney.

Here's the wall opposite of the fireplace. This is the entrance/small foyer/stairway. Yes I know, way too much furniture :). The built ins on the sides of the new fireplace can replace the either the hutch or the desk.

Ignore the rudimentary editing, but to give the illusion of height, I would keep whatever stone you choose uninterrupted from hearth to ceiling. If you do built-in on either side like your inspiration photo shows, I would either do glass shelves so as to have less visible horizontal lines of painted shelves, and no mantel all the way across. Ideally, I’d suggest just some lower cabinets no taller than 30” on either side of the FP. I would then put your tv on the console table facing the sofa and get rid of media unit it is currently on. Demolish the partial wall between the LR and DR areas along stone wall. I also am showing draperies @DR window as opposed to valance which is just another horizontal line cutting height of space.

If you are reusing the stone, I think you should leave out the largest stones since your ceiling height is only 8 feet. Adalisa's photo without an arch and with drapery on your windows gives an impression of openness. Because your sectional sofa is such a large piece, you need less, not more.

We like the idea of built ins with the stone extending all the way to the ceiling. It often makes the room look larger and the ceiling higher. You can go over the existing stone with a stone veneer and extend it more easily.
