I would switch out the wall color, pillows and throw from tan to a cream color. I agree about the rug.

I agree. I think it's the rug that's throwing it off.

I don't think cream would work on the walls for my white duvet. If the rug is throwing off my wall color, what would you suggest for a wall color? Or other suggestions on how to make the room look better?

To be honest, I think it would be easier to take out the green rug than to change other elements to try to make them go with the rug. Here's my thinking: The green of the rug (which I otherwise like) simply doesn't look good with the pinky beiges in the room. If only the wall were pinky beige, I'd say change the wall color to go with the rug. But the wall is effectively the same color (or at least the same color family) as the wall to wall carpeting, the throw blanket and the front pillows, and I doubt you want to change all of those. The blues in the room are one of the few colors that look good with picky beige, and the white duvet is fine, so really the only "odd man out" is the green rug. So while I might lighten the wall color a bit so it isn't such an exact match to the carpeting, I would only do this if the green rug were removed from the picture. The green tone just looks icky with that pinky-tan-beige.

While I like the green area rug, it's fighting with the broadloom, so even if you change the paint colour, you'll have an issue on the floor. I do think that there's enough of that rug colour in the room. I'd rather see you paint Benjamin Moore EXCALIBUR GRAY 2118-50, which is a mauve/gray that would be a little lighter than the drapes, and would tie in with the artwork and the bed pillow. It would also look very pretty with the brighter blue in the bathroom.

Yeah I'm not so sure about that green tone either. I bought the rug because I thought the room had too much tan with the walls and carpeting the same.

Maybe a rug -- creamy color with some of the bluer tones from your art, drapes and pillows? And an accent pillow or two with reddish/yellowish/orangish tones that pulls those colors from the artwork.

I think you're just lacking flow from one color to another. See how these rooms just work color wise (not necessarily the right style, but just as an example)? There are many ways you can adjust your room... I would first settle on the main accent color, either green or blue. If you go with green, I would replace the current blue pillows with a more green/blue shade that relates to the green. Switch curtains to white. Paint the room a light green shade. Work with bedding, eliminate the tan. Consider a larger white comforter. Add patterned green and white shams or throw pillows. Simplify the art behind your bed, I would try a large mirror. Cynthia-I love the idea of a grayish tone on the walls. I will have to pick up a swatch and see what it looks like with the carpet and drapes.

With that broadloom you'd have to go to more of a jade or teal green. The yellow green wouldn't work. That's why I'd lean towards the blue/mauve/gray that I suggested (above). Then you could keep your drapes and your bedding!

You're right Color Zen-I love the blue but I thought I needed more punch so I added more green from the art. I totally see now that they are fighting!

I must agree, the area rug does not work with the room, neither does the color of the walls with the blue drapes, it seems to me, there is a bit too much red on the wall color and the drapes seem to be too crowded with the sheers. Perhaps if you paint your doors and trim the same color as the walls in a semi gloss finish, the room may appear larger than it is. I would definitely get different drapes and remove the painting from above the bed. I see how you might have put it there to try to pull the blue from the drapes, which I think, you might have had a feeling, the colors dont go together, but, that is almost what a room on a dime ( from HGTV ) might look like. There are inexpensive drapes you can buy and pull the room together beautifully.

Okay... what about removing the rug...and possibly changing the wall color to something lighter that won't bring out the pink in the carpet tone? Also, what do you think about moving the large art from over the bed to the wall above the bench? I could relocate the Picasso.

I think you need to decide on the rug. If you are going with that rug then pick the white color in the lattice portion and get matching paint for that. Then you should consider addressing your drapes. They are too droopy. I woulk steam the white sheers and loose the blue drapes and then invest in some roman shades with a green trim to match the color of the rug. Then show some love to the bed. Get some large patterned pillows. The ones you have are nice but too plain and I think the room needs more texture and pattern. Also not quite sure if that is a photo or a flatscreen over the bed but that needs to be taken down and something else put up.

I just want to reach through the screen and swap those pictures on your wall. The bed coverings look like an upscale hotel but instead of taking time to appreciate it my eye is drawn upward to the vibrant blues of the picture while on the other wall the paler colors of the picture look lost in the large space it hangs in. Also, there seem to be a lot of rectangles. Carpet, bed, throw, throw pillow, pillows, headboard, and picture. I like the idea of gray for the walls or using a lighter tan with less pink tones.

Yes, I see what you're saying about the cream. The reason I was thinking cream is that I thought it might work better with the color of your furniture - which on my monitor, has more of a reddish brown tint. I agree that perhaps a gray might be an answer and maybe even a gray with no warmer undertone colors at all.

emzc... you are right about the furniture. I've tried to convince my hubby that a new headboard (not wood) would look better but he is not interested. I will try other changes instead.

Absolutely. Any lighter shade of a color from your sunset would work. Check out House Beautiful this month of Jan/feb. They used a color palette from the grand canyon of a warm glow of sunset they picked up from the rocks.

And the frames on the painting/photo ... you might want something softer than black. If you are going more gray/blue, probably silver ...

You could do a bright orange feature wall :)

Found the article from House beautiful, it was Jan issue. They were Behr colors, Ceramic Glaze, Southwest Stone, Copperleaf, Cinnamon Stick and an accent color using Sweet Tea.

Here is an update on the bedroom. We repainted the walls in SW Mindfull Gray, moved the art around, removed the rug, and hung the curtains with rings to make the less bulky. I am still working on new pillows or something for the bench...a bigger, plush or mohair pillow perhaps? I also need to work on acccessories for the dresser...I just put that stuff there for now...I want to keep the antique egg thing, that has sentimental value and I love it....just need to figure out the rest.

I just love how it is coming together...so much more my style and so much more soothing to me.

If I may say one thing. In the your photo, the mirror, over the bed, doesn't look quite right size wise. Not adequate enough.
One other thing, I'm not sure if this would be an issue with you but the sheers at the top are showing
above the drapes. But it is a peaceful looking space. Kudos to you!!

Oh that did come out lovely. I could see a double curtain rod and longer so that the right side can be pulled away from covering the window.
The mirror does look good but lonely. A couple of ideas for expanding on the mirror.

Change the color of the walls. The rug is very nice. Bring a green tone to the walls. Look outside your window - nature is a green blue color combo every day! Sky and trees, water and grass. The beige is too pinkish - at least in this photo - too much like a bandage! You will feel happy and soothed with green and blue.

If I cover up the two pieces of artwork (above bed and wall adjacent) then I think it all goes together nicely. Perhaps some darker green pillows? And I love grey the idea of a grey paint.

nikitasmom- it is a double curtain rod already, and it is plenty long, however due to the windows being adjacent to wall corners, I cannot extend the rods out further without the window being lop-sided, unfortunately. I do think that putting my curtains on rings instead of just through the rod helped balance the windows better.

Thanks for the suggestions on the mirror...this piece is one-of-a-kind since it was an old piece that I refinished myself...so I will keep my eyes open on that. It is a unique piece with lots of texture and detail that you can't see in the photos. I really like that it is no longer "heavy" as it was before with the art above the bed...it's refreshing to me when I walk in the room! :)

Agree three mirrors above bed. The one is too small. As I look at your room the beige throw seems to be throwing everything off. I love the pic of the woman. Assume you are working from there for color. I wonder if you need pillows with both colors in it as opposed to a solid color.

New wall color is great! Love how well the print next to the bathroom door looks with the room's colors! I also think the mirror above the headboard looks too small and needs two more mirrors, like nikitasmom picture. The two new mirrors could match each other, but be different than the center one. I also agree the sheers shouldn't show above the drapes. The room is looking very nice!
