Help Identifying Sofa/Chaise

Has anyone ever seen this type of sofa/chaise? It's like they took a sofa and cut it in half but the legs indicate otherwise. I'm very curious about it's name and history. I'm thinking of reupholstering it in an antique gray velvet and just sanding the wood and leaving it unfinished.

These were meant to be separated by either a small space or a side table much like traditional corner chairs, but on a much grander scale. I'm betting those were probably custom made.
