Quick question for you: does the room reflect your and your family's personality? I bet it doesn't, and that's why you are unhappy with it. Find things that are 'you,' and you'll love the room!

Maybe bring one of the blue vases up to the top shelf. You only have hits of gold on top shelf and I wonder if that would help! So pretty, nicely done.

It's a great room. Consider painting the back wall and sides inside the shelf area one of the darker reds in the painting.

I would change the paint above the mantle and also back of bookcases to match chair color, or sofa color. Add Raspberry throw pillows sparingly.

Maybe you just need to realize that you haven't found the last item that will complete the room, and keep looking. It took me years to find the right large earthenware vase to go on my hearth, but when I saw it [at the thrift store of all places!], I knew it was what I was looking for. Give yourself time to find what you're looking for. You'll know it when you see it.

I would keep the gold frames, but change out the book ends to something non metal. Maybe add an ivy plant to soften that area as well. Move one of the blue vases to the top shelf..not liking just 2 objects there and so many on the middle shelf.

Lovely lady is a great focus with fireplace and furniture. The strong yellow in the bookcase distracts me. Keep the wonderful art - try something less dramatic in the bookcase. She's lovely.

For me its a question of materials even more so than decor. There is a lack of organic elements in the room, such as wood, and is dominated by either glass, metal or ceramic or tile. Adding something crafted from wood, as well as a large vertical plant, would bring in more of the friendly ingredients needed to balance the energy of a cold feeling room (especially if you enjoy using Feng Shui to enhance a living space). I also like to add an element of dynamic quality that is perhaps unexpected. Here's a few visual ideas.

The wall behind the painting needs to be blue, same color as chairs. Pink flowers on table.

Books add warmth. Try that.

Painting seems hung too high. It is distracting at that height. It is a beautiful piece, just needs to come down a bit. Also, there is too much gold in your bookcases. Books or pottery that picks up the raspberry color in your picture. Beautiful room!

Beautiful room. The first thing that caught my eye was the painting. I'm not sure if the accent color above the mantel works best with it, though. Have you considered painting the wall navy blue or the same color as the other walls? I think it would make the painting pop if either the wall color was a dark blue or a lighter color.

I could be far off, but the items on the shelves aren't you, they're what you think you would like to be or what the room is supposed to look like. For instance, who is the bust on the mantle? Someone you admire? The room should reflect you and your family's interests, not something out of a design book. I don't mean to be harsh. Learning from books and infusing yourself into the design is tough.:}

I would add something in front of the fireplace--an interesting screen, fireplace tools, ottomans/poufs, or something else to break up the appearance of all the tile surrounding the fireplace opening. Otherwise, the room is gorgeous!

Consider painting the back of the bookshelves, perhaps in a rich cobalt blue to match your accent chairs or raspberry to match your gorgeous painting!

Maybe try a very narrow console table on the wall under the stairs; white trim around the doorway opening and bookshelf niche (to balance out the fireplace); and the blue chairs by the fireplace seem to dark- maybe recover the seat cushions with a coordinating print. Also try leaning the art on the mantle instead of hanging it.

You have really gorgeous and unique furniture; you have a large, beautiful painting over the mantle; BUT...... other mantle pieces and bookcase decor pieces look (mostly) "dinky" and ordinary.
First, I'd move the painting down to 4-5" above the mantle. Next remove candlesticks and bust from mantle and replace with matching large, clear, shapely vases with tall, feathery greenery. This will frame the painting and not compete with it.
Love the suggestion to paint the insides of bookcase cobalt blue! This will add some drama to the space which will balance the drama of the painting, without taking away from the painting. And I would rearrange the bookcase items this way:
- keep (only) those two wonderful square gold vases (vessels?) on the top shelf
- add something large and pink to match painting to next shelf - plate, tray, etc.
- put both gold frames on next shelf, and add a third gold VERTICAL frame to one side
- on bottom shelf, have pink vase with greenery on left and object on the right that matches the fireplace tile color.
And, by all means, take that great suggestion to add a vase of pink tulips to the coffee table! Little touch of the pink color in the painting, scattered around the room will pull it all together.

You asked about the bookcase. I think the gold pieces & frames do not look right with the colors in the room. I would get rid of the gold, add books ( especially on the bottom shelves), and add plants or flowers to liven up the space. Personal photos in simple frames might soften the bookcase too

Looks beautiful and classy. I love it. I like the suggestions about bringing a touch of the raspberry color into the seating group from the painting. The only thing I can see technically that I would do different is bring up the level and quality of the material at the fireplace surround.

The fireplace surround looks like ceramic tile and that material is rather pedestrian and workmanlike compared to the "fine" feeling you've created with your seating group and art. I would consider a classic marble surround with minimal seams. Carrera is always a sure bet but, there are other marbles that could work too.

Try to work with a stone source that maybe has some "scrape, dunnage or remnants". This way you do not need a whole slab and your money can go into the craftsmanship and the material cost is more manageable.

The highlight of your room is the painting. You need to pick out that raspberry, teal and green and add them to the rest of your room. I agree that the paint behind the painting is all wrong and detracts from such a key element. It also needs to be lowered. Put a sofa table on the stair wall and put the bust and candles on it and some nice woven baskets below. You need more natural elements. Put the gold vases in another room. I'm a Libra so it throws me off a bit that you have that tall side chair next to the sofa. Maybe it can go beside the table at the stairs or in front of the bookcase and move the 2 chairs to flank the sofa. Not fond of the coffee table - too small and insignificant. And even more metal. Try a larger, rustic one or a lacquered one in your accent color. The lowlight of the room is, unfortunately, the fireplace surround. I don't know how much it would cost to replace it but the color is SO wrong and the size, etc., looks a bit builders standard. If it isn't feasible to replace it, considering covering it with a screen - not gold! I'd also love to see some plush curtains. Contrary to how it sounds, there isn't that much that needs to be changed and I think you already knew what it was. Just really think about what you can do to enhance that picture because it really does make that room.

The base upon which the painting sits looks near perfect to me - at least on my monitor. It references the the subject's skin color and is a nice bridge between the sofa and floor color. I think it's on point.

A carrera marble surround for the fireplace, as suggested by sieglerdesign would be the icing on the proverbial cake if budget allows.

And, I love the cache of gold sequestered in its niche.

It's a pretty room, and this is a personal perspective, but for me, the room does need life from something natural and organic...a plant or two, perhaps?

My personal choice would be to remove one gold-y item from the bookcase, add more books, then add a couple plants to the room.
