I'm pretty sure that the only way to get rid of it (despite the 1 year round up stuff), is to dig up as many of the roots as possible. It appears to spread with root runners and seeds. I dug up the whole bed and got rid of as many roots as possible. I go out every day and check for new sprouts popping up (they do on occasion). And as soon as I see them, I yank them out as deep as I can. It will take some time and persistence, but the roots can't survive forever without getting energy from the leaves. So eventually, it should be under control.

Crown vetch, a legume and once sold as a good ground cover is now considered an invasive plant which spreads via rhizomes as well as seed. Mowing a stand seems to be one way to get rid of this, since it has worked here.
