Basement door???

The basement door swings into my kitchen and is preventing me from having an island. Any ideas for "collapsible" or "retractable" doors that don't look like a 1970's accordion disaster? There is no space for a pocket door, unfortunately. Need to be able to open and close from both kitchen going downstairs and up basement steps into kitchen.

if the swing of the door would hit the island, you either have a very wide basement door or you dont have enough travel path planned for your island, i think.

I don't know if these are code for the top of stairs though.

As long as the door does not swing into the stairwell you should be fine. Do you have to have a basement door, e.g. is the basement unfinished? Unless you want to keep the door to close off the basement from the upstairs I would go ahead and remove it and just case the opening.
