Blackberry patches

Hello all,

Blackberries out of control from a couple years of neglect (aging parents got all the attention). I'm commencing digging, but want to ensure they don't come back. What advice do you have post-digging?

I was thinking of black plastic and mulch covering. I did a dig and cardboard and heavy mulch a couple of years ago and all they did was thank me for the luxurious new accommodations. I dislike plastic, is there another landscape textile that might biodegrade after a couple of years? Or anything else that can be left in place and removed after a couple of years?

Note I'm going to continue commuting California to Chicago for the indefinite future, so I'm looking for something that doesn't require constant vigilance.

Thank you.
