Is the whole thing growing fat or just at one end? inconsistent watering that hits both extremes of wet and dry is sometimes a problem there.

Best bet is to buy a moisture meter and use it often. This way you will know the moisture content of the soil. Or you could stick your finger in, down a couple of knuckles. It's not always possible to water appropriately based on the clock....every so many hours/days, especially with containers. So many factors contribute to soil drying out. Lately it's been the wind for example. HTH.
