Painted wood dresser used for bathroom vanity

I am converting an antique painted (black) dresser into a bathroom vanity. Should I put a shellack or another type of finish on the top to protect the wood/paint? The bathroom is just a quarter bath, so moisture should not be a problem, just water spots from the sink.
