Breakfast-Yummy

So this morning I had a bacon sandwich smeared with Dawn's habanero jelly. It was pretty dern good! I think I will have another tomorrow! The sweet and heat of the jelly mingled very well with the salty bacon. Trust me.

And tonight I am having green chili over pulled pork. The jalapenos for the chili are out of the garden. Unfortunately the tomatillos and poblano are store bought. But it will still be delicious. I always overwinter a plant or two so I have about a dozen peppers ready right now.

    Yummmm sounds good.

Do you make your own green chili?

DH makes it because folks here don't make it like were used to being from Colo.

Would you share your recipe? If so would you email it to us? Thanks.

We planted the Biker Billy peppers so maybe we'll have peppers this yr.

Yes I make my own. I like the tomatillo green chili. I know in Colorado and especially New Mexico it is made with peppers only and no tomatillos. I do not have a recipe. If I do not have tomatillos I use green tomatoes with a splash of vinegar for the tartness. But basically I fire roast about a pound of tomatillos, a poblano, and however many jalapenos, serranos, or garden salsa peppers I want at that time. Blend it all up with toasted cumin, toasted oregano, salt and pepper. Simmer with chicken broth. Thats about it. Easy Peasy.

Ok I will add don't forget the green onions and cilantro. And this batch of tomatillos were extremely tart so I put in a little sugar to cut the tartness. But that is more of an "on the fly" ingredient.

Scott has hidden talents!! Next year we need to talk recipes too! :)

I'm glad you're enjoying the jelly Scott, and it sounds like you are very handy in the kitchen (as is my husband).

There's also recipes out there for a cherry version of Habanero Gold (I believe it is called Cherry Obsession) and a different version called Turkey's Revenge, where you substitute cranberries. I've made it with dried apples and dried peaches and we liked the peach one but weren't too crazy about the apple one. Something in the apples seemingly drained the color out of the chopped up pieces of peppers and onions, ruining the confetti-like appearance of the jelly.

Somewhere here on this forum, Lisa linked a recipe for Habanero Gold cheesecake. You also can make Cheddar thumbprints and fill the thumbprints with Habanero Gold. I have friends who add a thin layer of it to their Jalapeno Poppers before they grill them. As it melts, it sort of glazes the entire popper with a thin layer of jelly. Their poppers usually are jalapeno halves stuffed with some sort of cheese mixture and then wrapped in bacon, and they like the combination of bacon with the jelly as well.

Since I mentioned Cherry Obsession, I'll find and link one of the old threads from the Harvest Forum that contains the recipe. Just talking about it makes me want to make (and eat) some.

Despite all the various Habanero Gold substitutions that people have devised, I still think Habanero Gold is the best of the bunch. For some of my friends that cannot tolerate the heat of habaneros, I've also make Jalapeno Gold, substituting an equivalent amount of jalapenos for the habaneros. And, because you have to live dangerously sometimes, I made a couple of batches of XXX Habanero Gold a couple of years ago. I tripled the amount of habanero peppers in the original recipe, reducing the amount of sweet peppers by the same amount so I wasn't changing the final product's density or pH. The XXX version was too hot for most people, but was a big hit with one of Tim's coworkers who is from one of the Caribbean island nations and for whom there is no such thing as a pepper jelly that is too hot.

The Cherry Obsession Recipe is in this thread

I almost lost my precious jar of Habanero Gold! Sunday I was looking high and low for it. I was sure I came home with it, I remember holding on to it very tightly. Couldn't find it anywhere. Last night it occurred to me that it might have somehow gotten left in a box that went out with the recycles. So I dug through my recycles can...YES, there it was!!! Good thing I looked....the recycle guy comes tomorrow! I would have been so sad to have lost it!

I don't remember the cheesecake,...but that sounds YUMMY.

Those are interesting uses for Habanero Gold jelly. Are there others? A couple of friends I have given Habanero Gold to have used it on pork loin and loved it but I haven't gotten around to trying it. This year I experimented with using Caribbean Red and Chocolate habaneros. All were good but the best batch was a blend of Ghost, Scorpion and Carolina Reaper. I plan on making more jelly with those this year. Glad I found a way to enjoy peppers normally too hot to eat.

There are tons of uses. The standard way is to somehow combine the hot pepper jelly with something like full-fat (reduced fat works less well and no-fat doesn't work) cream cheese as the fat in the cheese helps make the heat more bearable.

Lots of people do melt down the jelly in a glass bowl in the microwave to liquify it and then brush it on various kinds of pork which grilling it. The flavors of the Habanero Gold seem to really complement pork. It also is yummy as a glaze for grilled salmon and some people use it when grilling steak (I haven't tried that).

A lot of my friends eat Habanero Gold on crackers smeared with cream cheese, but some eat it right out of the jar by the spoonful. Some spread it on the bread when they make a ham sandwich.

You can mix it with softened cream cheese to make a fabulous dip. Some people serve it with chips, others with crackers. Some use it as an ice cream topping, normally over vanilla ice cream, but I know one person who likes to use it as a topping for pineapple ice cream or pineapple sherbet.

Really, you can substitute it for any sauce you use in any sort of meat recipe if you want to kick up the flavor of the meat a notch. The uses of pepper jelly are limited only by your imagination. However, one of my friends says it is meant to be eaten from the jar, one spoonful at a time, so you can enjoy its flavor with no other flavors getting in the way. : )

Another friend of mine prints out a list of "Uses For Pepper Jelly" and attaches it to pepper jellies that he gives as gifts. I bet I can find something similar by googling and link it below. Let's see if I can.....

Thanks for the suggestions and link. 31 ways to eat pepper jelly? This internet thing is endless with information. I never thought to look. I guess I will have to get started right now. I have 11 pepper plants started on January 1 so it won't be long till the new batch. Hope I haven't given all of last years jelly away.

Dang it! Now I'm looking for a spot to plant some Habies! This is getting ridiculous!

Well Dawn you said "handy in the kitchen". I have always found since I am not very handsome then I better be pretty handy! And I think some reaper gold would be pretty good smeared on fatty pork butt, salted heavily and smoke it. Eat it with a cold slushy fruity cocktail or something. Yeah...yeah...(goes off into drooling over pork). And maybe I am going to have to plant habs this year to. The garden just keeps getting tighter. I will shoehorn one in somewhere.

Oh man. HGJ on buttered bread with bacon. GOOD.

Paula, it's so good to see you on here! I'm happy you can EAT yer maters and.. *hugs*

yay Hi Paula. It is great to hear from you. potato soup sounds awesome.

Oh, Paula! YAY, I am glad you have been sprung and get to eat!

Paula's back in the land of the fully conscious...yay!

Hey...random idea, but...since so many of us have a "pepper thing", maybe next year we could incorporate some sort of pepper product tasting, or pepper jelly judging, or (probably not) pepper eating contest! Haha...I like a teensy bit of heat with my flavor, but this could be a draw for some spouses/family members...just thoughts :D

Sharon - that's a great idea! At the Fling, we could have people "enter" their best "pepper" recipe for tasting and then all the attendee's could vote on their favorite. We could tally and announce the winner after the door-prizes and the proud recipient would win the "Golden Spade"! (I may or may not have watched too many cooking shows during my "down time". heh)

Not hijacking the thread - but thank you all. I'm still pinching myself to believe that I'm out and feel as good as I do. But I'm still "chill". That surgery stuff wears a person out.

Lisa, Remember when GW added the crawl at the right side of the screen and then they'd have a random story or photo pulled from some GardenWeb thread posted at the top of the right hand side above the crawl? There was a recipe there above the crawl one day last spring. I don't know if you linked it, or if you just mentioned it and asked us if we saw the Habanero Gold Jelly cheesecake recipe. I responded that I had seen it. I meant to save that recipe to my favorites, but can't find it now, so guess I didn't save it.

Any of you who've never made pepper jelly don't know what you're missing. It is ridiculously easy and people go crazy over it. I give away a couple hundred jars a year of Habanero Gold, mostly at Christmas time. I also make Red Jalapeno Jelly and Green Jalapeno Jelly. There's tons of other recipes out there for pepper jellies of all kinds.

With Habanero Gold, people like me who'd never be able to eat habaneros at all in their raw form can eat them in the jelly. There's something about the combination of the hot pepper flavor and the sweetness of the apricots and sugar that is just sheer perfection.

Scott, Don't sell yourself short. Ask your wife----I bet she'll tell you that you are both handsome and handy! I bet you can squeeze in one more plant. Pepper plants grow great in pots too, and habanero, like so many other pepper plants, are gorgeous plants in general. I especially love how they look when the fruit are turning orange. Also, this is very important Habanero Gold information: anything made with Habanero Gold might be a little hot so should be accompanied by a margarita to cool one's burning mouth.

Any of you who have to run to the store now and buy a habanero pepper plant----if you happen to see the hybrid "Chichen Itza" habanero instead of the ordinary open-pollinated one, grab it. The habaneros it makes are 2 to 3 times as big as the ones the OP plant produces and it also produces many more fruit per plant.

Bon, Next time put it on buttered cornbread with bacon......even better than GOOD. Glad you're enjoying it too.

Lisa, Glad you found the missing jar!

Paula, I am glad you're feeling better and potato soup sounds yummy to me. I'm glad you are wise enough not to interpret "eat what you want" to mean you can eat Habanero Gold the same week you had surgery. You'll be able to enjoy it soon enough!

Sharon and Paula, The pepper idea is a real winner and I like the idea of the Golden Spade. Half the fun of gardening is what we can do with our veggies, fruits, herbs and flowers after we've grown them.

Ohhh, I did love that margin crawl....or, stalker feed as we call it on Facebook :) I found this:
    Savory Cheesecake

I would think straight cheesecake with the HGJ as a topping would be lovely, but on second thought, maybe too sweet?

I don't know who brought the zesty bread & butter pickles or the candied jalapeños, but Daryl picked a jar of each and they are mmmm mmmm good! I was coming up the porch stairs yesterday evening and I heard him exclaim, "Whoo!" (That's quite a compliment, coming from him.)

Lisa, I bet that is it!

I think straight sweet cheesecake would be perfect with Habanero Gold topping too. I wouldn't even care if it was too sweet. Some days we just need a little extra sweetness in our lives.

Sandplum, I brought them both and I am so pleased that Daryl likes them. I hope I'm able to can enough of Annie's Salsa this summer so I can bring it to the Spring Fling next year. There are so many wonderful (and simple!) ways to can produce from the garden and I love having extras to share with our friends and family.
