I grow 4 different cultivars of Pittosporum tenuifolium (Kohuhu) and I can't say I've ever noticed any unpleasant aroma from them. The flowers, which are inconspicuous, are only scented at night and smell sweetly like honey. I've never seen any berries/fruit either, but is quite possible yours may fruit more readily in a warmer climate. In any regard, the berries are tiny, not messy and as inconspicuous as the flowers.

'Golf Ball' is able to get quite a bit larger than 2-3' typically reported....5x5 is not uncommon, so prepare to do some pruning to keep size in check.

I did see that they tend to outgrow their listed sizing, but I do like them more than the cliche boxwoods and figure a little biannual bushwhacking could be strangly cathartic.
