Hi Liz: I'm right across the border from you in the Windsor area. That is too bad about your Euchera. I have read that when the woody stem gets too long that you can dig it up, divide your Eucheras and then plant it at a deeper depth so long as you leave the crown (where the new growth is coming from) above ground. Maybe someone else will comment who has done this.

Sounds like a classic case of frost heaving. Searching "heuchera frost heaving" will turn up explanations such as this http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/gardens-gardening/your-garden/help-for-the-home-gardener/advice-tips-resources/pests-and-problems/environmental/winter-injury/frost-heaving.aspx. When conditions favor it, I've learned to make a habit of checking on them during thaws & gently patting the soil around them back down. Adding more soil to the level of heave or digging & replanting at proper level works for me this time of year, as does temporarily potting them up till they recover if they're really dishevelled.

Barb this winter was just insane for the number of freeze thaw cycles and as these plants were not new at all, I suspect that these plants are simply too big and need a dividing. I will be working on getting their overcrowded bed back in shape soon and making sure they a deeper in the ground when I am finished

I'm in Massachusetts, where we had the snows to end all snows this winter. I had read about putting bricks/stones near the heuchera crowns to prevent heaving, and I had done so back in the fall -- it worked very well where I did it! Didn't lose any, either, so I'm smiling. =)
