I have been selling cut flowers for a few years and am a small scale operation as well. I have finally stopped agonizing over my prices, it was a nighmare because every location has different price points depending on the consumers likes. Where I live, I cannot price a lily stem very high, they are not a large seller, as well as the gladiolus, however, peonies and sunflowers command a very good price.

Selling directly to the public I think you would do better to sell the larger flowers, peonies, lillies, glads, sunflowers,zinnias etc. as singles, or bunches of 5. Requiring at least 5 keeps you from dealing with one of this and one of that, and moves your product before it is past it's prime, as well as making it worth your while to pick.

The smaller flowers, statice,cosmos,snaps,phox, are usually sold in bundles of 10 depending on your preference, again this keeps the purchase to a decent amount for you.

Fillers, as with small flowers,are done by the bunch, much as you see in the grocery stores, with many more stems per bunch (the number depending on stem size) than the small flowers.

You can sell a bucket of assorted large blossoms, and seperately a bucket of smaller flowers with a garauntee of so many bundles or stems per bucket.

Sell your flowers with a lable something like " in season fresh flowers" It can be frustrating for local growers to de-bunk the myth that any flower is available at any time in the growing season. This can be especially hard when dealing with brides who have a "set" idea on what they want. I have had customers get upset when they cannot get a peony after middle of July.

The following link is a US govt. site that lists flower prices at the large wholesale auction, and updates it every few days.These can be a starting point but remember the buyers of these flowers then sell on to florists, or other wholesalers, and the price increases with each "middle man" so the prices you charge will be higher.

I am just starting a flower farm .... I need pricing for local flowers , zinnias, dahlias, sunflower, daisies.... Is it better to sale to florist or by bouquets?

I am beginning flower farming this year and talked with a wholesaler who wants cuts of Iris germanica. I'm trying to locate pricing per stem or as he suggested bundles of 5. He offered 5/$2.30. I know they are not a usual cut flower but I also realize they should be more than the $2.50 he offered. Any help as I am only finding prices on the bulb form. Help!!!!!

Hello Kathy I have included a link to the USA flower market prices, this is an active site and shows the daily prices at the wholesale flower markets. These are those huge ones that sell to your florist's wholesaler. The florist will pay more than this because the wholesaler will then mark them up when selling to them.

That said, it is hard to price, every area has it's specific challenges and a flower that sells here will not necessarily sell for the same price somewhere else. I suggest you look at the retail price, at another shop, to gain insight into the final selling price of your product. Then you can see if his proposed price is fair.

I checked out that site the other day. They only show prices for the Dutch variety not the larger german bearded. Any guesses as what I might charge per stem. They are much larger and most are very fragrant, 2-3 X the size of the Dutch.
