Damaged but surviving!

A fallen tree seemed to take out this clematis which, at the time, was blooming beautifully in its 2nd season. Since the incident, this year no new growth came from the ground and only from mid-vine upwards does it appear to be thriving. Any thoughts on getting it back into shape? Will the plant survive this way long term?

It doesn't look like it's been pruned recently. Cutting it back hard in late winter/early spring can encourage to to push out new growth from the root crown, resulting in more stems/vines and a more vigorous plant. I'd also move the bark mulch out of the way and apply some good compost around the base of the plant, avoiding piling it up around the stem. Alfalfa meal can also help to encourage basal shoots.
