You can grow darn near anything in a container if you size the container correctly for the plants and follow some basic container gardening practices. Using the correct potting soil is the most critical element so I've linked you to a discussion about the importance of a good potting soil from th Container Gardening forum. I currently have a guava and sugar apple tree growing in containers at zone 5 and they are healthy as ever. I would reccommend changing the soil every 3-4 years and trim back the roots when doingso to encourage new growth. You also want really well draining soil. I use half perlite and half ciitrus and palm soil with a little organic matter/fertilizer.
