oh palimpsest, if they could tell us i don't think they would. who would want to see that look in your eyes everytime you look at them? much better that we accept them for who they are now, then what caused them to be how you first met them.

On May 17th, I posted "I would ask my beautiful 12 year old Cookie what I can do to make her last few weeks more comfortable." Well, she actually had more than a few, we lost her on July 22. I guess now I would like to ask her: Are you waiting for me in Heaven? Have you met my Mom and Dad and sister? I know they will love you like I did, and will keep you company until I get there. Rest in peace, sweet Cookie Doe.

Just know that she is fine now and you suffer far more than her, which is always good.

design, that is exactly my puppy, but how do you get that wonderful straight hair?ugghhh the knots of it all! swallow an entire bottle of conditioner and yet it is like i never touched it. Mine believes that cats should be worn on the end of his nose. the cats just say oh, it is the baby, what can you expect. Secretly, I believe all these little white dogs have infiltrated to take over the world. brew hahaha

This has been around for years...but for anyone who has ever lost a beloved pet, it always seems to be helpful...

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of
heaven is a place called Rainbow
Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet
goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our
special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine,
and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals that had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor;
those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we
remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for
one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be
left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and
looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs
carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you
cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses
rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look
once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but
never absent from your heart.

However, years later it was a powerful healer for my son, who was ten when we suddenly lost our dear, sweet 5-years-young Great Pyrenees, Raleigh, to cancer. After the shocking news at a routine checkup, struggling through an attempt at treatment, and finally he was released from cancer's irreversible progression and pain in a peaceful departure at our vets' office, we returned to an empty house and indulged ourselves in our grief for a few hours -- tears, stories and laughter for our sweet, special boy.

As afternoon approached, we told our son that it was up to him whether he wanted to play in his little league game that day -- he could play, he could stay home, or go and change his mind when he got there. He decided to play, and we were so glad he did, because rising up over the baseball field and out of the trees beyond was a double rainbow, and the poem came right to mind.

I made sure he saw it, and on the way home, I said, "That has to be a sign from Raleigh. It looked like a bridge, didn't it? What do you think it means? Let's google 'rainbow bridge' when we get home, okay?" knowing exactly what we'd find when we did. And there it was, all over the internet, a loving message from Raleigh to his 10-y-o best friend in the world.

Have you tried one of those wraps? Has anyone? We saw some recently, but my hubby felt that puppies were more concerned about certain body parts and forgot all their other worries, so we bypassed them. But i still wonder.

I would ask frances, our rescue rabbit, if she remembers her "before" life. I hope not. We tell her she rescued us, which she did.

wonderful article, in the last few years, i have become so amazed at how rabbits react to care and attention.

@barnhart-my husband is trying to figure out how to download fr the phone. She's a champagne d'argent, really pretty grey. Just read your wonderful article, so sorry for your losses. It took us 8 months after loosing gunny to be ready. Francis came from our local shelter, a cruelty case from portland or, there were so many that 5 ended up 5 1/2 hrs away. Her breed is standoffish (which she isn't) so she was there a month. I hung up the phone & my husband said "she's not staying there 1 more night" and off we went. She has a blankie for the nights she wants to be in bed with us. Best pets ever.

What are you trying to tell me here?

since he was little, our Rorrie (short for Beauregard-remember it is important) has organized things in certain ways, not limited by any one thing. we have had stripes, solid colors, alphabet, things in groups, by animal type, etc. etc. for the past few years not so much, maybe because i was so ill? or maybe we did not notice, because i was so ill. But we are now entering a new bout. as i look next to the computer chair, i see the only 2 turquoise colored items we own. 1 catnip toy which is really not his-he lays claim to all toys, the other a tug rope. Everynight for about 2 weeks he has off and on hauled things to our bed, things he might have dug out of the bottom of his toy box or behind the couch. So now, every night, I climb into Bed, to sleep with all 3 Boys-Granted one is hubby, in our home, surrounded by a BrownBlack Bear, a Baltimore Oriole Bird, and a Blue Bar-soft but still shaped like a bar. coincidence? I don't think so, these are all the b's we have. So somebody please explain?

Barnhart, like yourself I received this from a friend after losing a beloved bird dog named Gunner who I spent many endless wonderful days alone with afield. My reaction was similar to yours, 'what a nice gesture of caring from a friend, but it kind of ended there'. At a loss for what to say others who lost a loved pet, I have forwarded it many times, in some cases the response was surprisingly positive...but never negative; so I continue to send it along with a short note expressing my sympathy and with a nice comment about their lost pet.

The story about your son's experience is wonderful and maybe just maybe by sending it along like I do, there might be another friend (or their family) who might get a similar value from it.

I'd ask him if he needs more appreciation for keeping hubby and I safe from TV dogs. When we have the TV on, our German Shepherd, Saber, sits in front of it and watches for dogs. When he sees one, he barks like crazy. I'm absolutely sure he thinks the TV is a big window and those dogs are just a jump away from coming into our house and "getting" us. He seems so satisfied when the TV dog goes away, apparently secure in the fact that HE was the one who kept that TV dog from harming us.

Ok, we know you know your letters, your colors, german, the dif between stripes and spots and even how to count. So how come you do not get fall back an hour. I walk you 2-3 pm, now you whine at 10 am?
