Conifer Choices

Hi,

I have moved to a two acre property and I would like to have privacy and wind protection. Shade is not an issue as the yard is a blank slate and the trees would be on the north side of the property. About conifers, I know nothing - I am a hosta girl :)

Blue spruce look nice. Any advice would be appreciated, I am in Ontario, Canada zone 5a

Hey Paula, welcome to conifers. Blue Spruce (Picea pungens) can have trouble east of the Mississippi. For spruce, look for Picea abies, omorika, or glauca. Perhaps some firs like Abies concolor, balsamea or lasciocarpa. Also consider Thuja occidentalis. The key is to diversify the planting so one malady doesn't wipe out the whole planting. As any windbreak, you'd want to stagger the trees so as not to line them up like soldiers. Also consider smaller plants in front of the trees.
