Go with crushed rock so it will pack down.

I am also thinking something heavy or compact enough that will stay put when blowing leaves off of it with a backpack blower.

What do you use for the edging?

We are using brick pavers for edging. I think it will give it a little buffer to prevent the gravel from getting too out of hand.

Thanks for the edging ideas; I'll be doing some walkways in the front yard and don't want the gravel/rock to spread out.

You can also consider decomposed granite, which is essentially gravel, just very fine pieces. DG can also be stabilized, to help prevent it from being blown away by the leaf blower you mentioned.
