Too Dense Soil?

Hi there!

I could very well be overthinking this, but I have 4 JMs in a raised bed.
'Oregon Sunset,' 'Green Cascade' (deer just defoliated this one) 'Corillium' and 'Green Elf.'

My concern is that this soil is very, very dense from 10 years of layering and adding mulch, wood chips, etc. I've seen how my repotted JMs did when they were in a better/different, lighter medium.

Is there a way, and should I do something to incorporate some kind of rock or ... or ... to increase drainage? I don't want my trees to suffocate, given the fact they're fighting deer, too.

Thanks!
