I'm sure all these surveys will be used in the future by retailers to figure out what we buy and how often:)

I am from the Netherlands and we don't own that much stuff in general compared to people in North America. Generalizing a lot here of course. Why would I need a minimum of 3 sets? I need one set on the bed and another for switching or in case of sickness. Luckily in North America we have big washers and dryers that have shorter cleaning times.

We don't have the big shopping malls in the Netherlands, but we have a few good stores for bed linens. I don't think you will find a lot of top sheets in those stores though, they are not being used a lot. I don't wash my duvet itself very often, but my duvet cover instead of the top sheet.

@havingfun as with so many other things in life I guess it's a question of what works for each and everyone of us. There's no right and wrong, just differences that make life interesting :)

For the record, I (from the US) have only one sheet set for each bed. Will get an extra just in case, but I don't feel the need for more sheets than I'm actually using. I just wash 'em when I need to and put them back on right away.

Maybe I shouldn't speak for others, but I don't think duvets (that's the same thing as a comforter, right?) are as common here in the US. We're just as likely to have comforters with nonremovable covers, blankets, or bedspreads/coverlets as a duvet with a cover on it.

Then there are mattress pads, which serve to protect your mattress or add extra cushion or maybe coolness (I think was what havingfun was talking about when she referred to her "duvet"). I hear the best mattress pad for cooling, havingfun, is wool. It's fluffy. I think I'm going to get one.

Like I stated in my previous comment, I change my sheets around every 2 weeks, but then again I'm single with no girlfriend; but if my situation changed then I would change them more often, especially changing them the day after lovemaking.

Zaz I am a foot thermometer person too! First husband said it was cause i was a bear, second one just gave up tucking it in! Says he is amazed i can walk in the morning.

Wish I could say it was me ... but it's actually my cleaning lady who does it once a week and I love the way she perfectly tucks the corners to make a tight fit which showcases my custom bubinga wood platform bed. Love coming home to find one of her bedding creations - looks like a West Elm catalogue shot. She's a treasure :)

The only times I do change the sheets more often are times when I sweat in bed, like when I get a cold; other than that I don't really sweat much, I'm pretty clean in bed. It's also because I'm a very busy person being a single homeowner that has a full time job in an office outside of the home; some days there are never enough hours to get everything done that I want to get done, so changing linen waits; besides, I take a shower in the morning before going to work.

About every 3-4 days. But if a cat tosses a fur ball, they get washed immediately. Cats love when you change the sheets. They jump onto the bed, scrambling underneath the air-billowed top sheet. I have to force them off to finish making the bed. Soon, they settle down for a nap and seem to enjoy my laundry soap's faint lavender scent. Cats love clean.

cocoa, i like to believe everyone washes their sheets then, the opposing thought is just horrible!

We have 10 sets of king size sheets to match the bed covers for our bed.
And really, anyone who believes someone would change their bed sheets every 3 months, has got some problems.

When we lived in Fl. I used to change then every 2 1/2 months, since it was hot and humid there ;0).

Change sheets biweekly, pillowcases weekly, iron for guests. However, am in process of upgrading all of my pillowcases, protectors, and pillows, and as such will probably start ironing pillowcases for hubby and me. New ones are LL Bean Egyptian with our last initial embroidered. Seems a shame to leave them wrinkled. I use linen spray and baby powder on mattress pad and pillows each time I change sheets/pillowcases. Oh, and definitely use top sheet tucked in firmly. I don't have the time or energy to wash blankets or comforters that are not buffered from direct contact with skin/fluids etc.. . .

Not willing to start over again, but just saw a special with Miranda Hart tonight. She started out saying 6 weeks, and went down to one week "to be socially acceptable." saying as an aside "my goodness you people have control of your lives." thought it was very cute, after going through this go around. lol

Hahaha! Iron sheets? I'm clean but not neat. I wash a set of sheets then when dry (sometimes on line, sometimes in dryer) I stuff the whole set in a pillowcase and lob it on the shelf. Pssst: the wrinkles disappear in a day or so.

I agree with tink23 as far as biweekly, yet pillowcases at least every week. As far as ironing, nope I don't do that. Do people really iron their sheets? lol! I buy the ones that really do not wrinkle. Of course the catch is folding them correctly. Also, blankets can go at least a month in most cases before washing.

As someone has mentioned I think it matters if you shower before bed to make the bedding smell and feel clean for a while.

I was brought up to shower/bathe before going to bed and once I got married made my husband do it (mornings also) and at the end of the week the sheets are still crisp white and smell clean. I do change them though every week because of my husband's allergies.

once a week or shorter , depending on the weather and pillowcases almost every day , no ironing because I use 100% cotton jersey sheets . The duvet-cover is regular cotton (not those heavy North American one that weigh a ton) and no I don't waste time to iron it. If I take it out of the dryer right away and put it back on it looks fine. I have 2 duvet both filled with silk , one very thin for summer and the winter one a bit thicker. Never had any allergy-problems with them. I do not pull up my bedding in the morning but fold it down and stand the pillows up to have it aired all day . No, I don't have the bed-room door always open because I like a cold bedroom so the windows (I live in a condo very high up and have the clean air coming in from the ocean ) are open in there and the door is closed.

Seems like there are lots of comments about housekeepers and cleaning ladies. Wish we could all afford to have someone else do the housework! I wouldn't say no to a gardener, either. I live alone, shower in the evening, wear clean pajamas, and keep my house cool. Two sets of sheets is plenty: one smooth cotton, one flannel. I work full time and enjoy a social life. Clean sheet night is always a treat, but, honestly, don't you people have better things to do?

With our current count of 3 dogs/4 cats & 2 permanent foster cats I would change the sheets every day if I had the time for that. And with night sweats (discuss with menopausal women please) night showering doesn't last! HAHAHAHA. (Dare I mention the "s-e-x" word?) Clean sheets are quite important in our household.

Once a week, sometimes I can go 10 days but by then it's mandatory to freshen up the bed with clean sheets.

Every three or four days. We have a small dog that sleeps on the bed, I have a top sheet that I change every day.

Think I already commented but I'll do it again. By other I mean we go no more than 3 days between sheet changes. If I had the energy and inclination, would do it every day. And yes, there are a couple of sheets I have to break out the iron for. One top sheet is pure cotton and looks like crap when it comes out of dryer so I iron it. I also iron the folded edges on the top sheets that aren't completely flat after the dryer. Gives me a great excuse to put the iron to use. With all the synthetics out these days, don't have much use for an iron. Ultimately, were it up to my husband, it would be a week or possibly two between sheet changes. There ya go.

I think you need to take into account the time in your life! Sex with more than one partner, do you change the sheets???? Nursing a baby???????? The family bed???? Kids in your bed because they've wet their bed, or they've thrown up in their bed?

I used to adore eating my dinner in bed and watching some television and working, then I had kids so no more eating in the bed.

And how about the people with cats and dogs, they must be kept busy washing the sheets. Ideally I would wash my sheets and hang they out dry on a perfectly sunny, windy Santa Ana day!

max, what about linen sheets? I have all kind of sheets, linen being one of them.

As for taking into account all of those, if accidents happen such as a kid gets sick or something gets spilled, those are exceptions. I won't comment on the multiple partner...that seems to be for someone who has a specific job..

I usually wash everything weekly. However, during the drought, every other week and a bit, but airing everything on the line outside twice a week.

this is a fun topic!! i change sheets as needed; theres too many factors that determine when… the real reason i came to comment is about the ironing!! for all those appalled about the process; have you ever thought about how the steam iron disinfects your bedclothes?? hee thats why i do it! i get it steamy hot as possible; and i have plenty to hold me over between changing in order to have a special ironing session every month or so. :)

I change the sheets once a week and they are always ironed and lovely crisp 100 percent percale cotton.

poppiepink: I don't understand what you mean. I am not appalled by the ironing process, I just don't understand the reason. What do you mean that "steam iron disinfects bedclothes"?

Wondering how many people make their beds everyday...regardless of the changing of sheets.

hi buster!! sorry if I wasn’t clear!! the hot iron and steam kills bacteria and germs!! probably same reasoning for ironing undergarments. Also, i use a vapor steamer to clean the house; does a terrific job!!

I never make my bed -- the only time it's made is the day the sheets are changed (usually biweekly). I never iron my sheets; I never iron 99% of my clothes either. It's survival of the fittest.....if it doesn't survive being washed and dried and worn without ironing, it won't survive in my wardrobe.

I also don't feel a need to clean my clothes or sheets beyond what the washer and dryer can do for me, which is pretty darn good.......even health care facilities don't iron as part of their cleaning or sterilizing procedures.

Thanks PoppiePink. I am hopeful that my washing/drying does enough of the bacteria killing as is needed. I too don't iron anything anymore Toronto Vet & have NEVER EVER ironed any undergarment. OY!!
