More info: there are two distinctly different types of strong stems I see in this (fig) patch: dry, dark brown, and cinnamon colored smooth. I suspect the cinnamon colored ones are either the invasive vine or hybridized plant with fig because the stems are pretty straight, but as you can see in the photo of the invader, its stems are straight and it shoots out very strong tendrils that wind around and around the fig branches and anything else available that looks straight and strong!

I wish I could place an arrow to point out the stub but it is the short, cut iff one which looks like an aged grape vine root stub amidst the fig stems.

Also, are new fig shoots cinnamon red in color?

Time for some serious pruning Molly. I can't say for sure, but the whole top looks dead to me. The cinnamon colored stems are young fig branches that were frozen, they change color from green or brown to red after they die and dry out. The larger trunks might have some life left... Any dead branches should be dry by now and snap when bent, try the tops of the large ones and work your way down (you will need a pruning saw most likely). Get as much of that grapevine as you can also, but be careful, I see a fig bud in the last pic @7:00. You want to clear the dead stuff and weeds before the buds grow large because they are tender and easily damaged. If the top is all dead then more will form, pick 3-5 and rub out the rest for a nice shaped bush.

The very top picture in the above set is the result of heavy clearing of the invasive vine, as debris on the ground, not on the fig bush.
