Need help for this empty square

Hello!

This spot hosted a dwarf Japanese maple until last week. I hated it. I know we live in a brick house, but I'm more of a cottage loving design person rather than the stately foundation plantings typically seen with my type of home. I have put in a few groundcovers (ignore the spurge, I moved it out of there) but I'm at a loss for what to do with the rest. I would love a small pond, but it probably isn't practical in this spot. To the left of this is another area I could incorporate a pond, If I ever did choose to do so.

Would shrubs go best in here? Would it look silly as a 3 season perennial garden? Should I stick with bulbs and ground covers?

I'm in Zone 5b. We have been hammered with snow the past couple of years, and extremely freezing temps. This square here sees a lot of snow pile up.

Any suggestions are most appreciated!

Thank you!
