paint bricks?

Starting to paint around the house. Using mostly neutral greys. Any thoughts on this this space? Paint bricks or no? Built in shelves on either side of the fireplace?
Want to eventually put hardwood floors in but not in the budget now. Any help would be much appreciated. This is my first time asking the houzz community!

yes i would put shelves either side of the fireplace, i think it would make the space seem wider. and no i dont think i'd paint the bricks.

No, please don't paint the bricks. Fireplace looks great as is. Shelves on either side would also look nice. Suggest relocating the mirror.

I think the bricks look beautiful! I would add maybe a large, wooden mantelpiece to accent the rustic fireplace and make it stand out. Rustic chic!
