Lilacs every other year

I've come to realize that my lilacs bloom every other year. There were zero flowers last year (and 3 years ago...). This year is a blooming year, and they look lovely.

I've done a little research and it seems one possibility is that I need to deadhead. I do usually take some flowers for bouquets, but I don't deadhead everything. Of course most people I know neglect their lilacs completely and get beautiful blooms every year! Maybe it's because mine are young-ish? They're somewhat scrawny, but I think they're maybe 9-10 years old, not brand new.

Is deadheading the answer? I'll have to get up on a ladder but I can do it. Any other ideas?
thanks!
