It's even worse this morning.. More black spots and they are shiny and oozing.

Take it back immediately,there's obviously an infection within and the symptons show it could be a nasty one,perhaps even spreadable....don't waste any time with this plant it's not worth it sorry.

I agree. Any kind of sapping from an undamaged trunk of a Japanese maple is highly unusual and would indicate some sort of problem. I am not aware of any pathogens that would result in this sapping (but that certainly isn't a definitive diagnosis!). Do there appear to be any obvious holes behind the sap?

Is this the same Crimson Queen you were asking about previously regarding leaf color and leaf dropping? That would kind of make some sense.......

Looks like some sort of weeping canker, which can be caused by planting the trunk too deep (and other things, too). Return it ASAP.

Thanks guys. I returned it. The lady at the nursery said it's common for Japanese maple to have a little sunscald and bleed out sap. Put it right back on the floor to be sold Haha. I told her it might be canker and she dismissed it, saying if had canker the tree would be pretty terrible looking. Yeah, gardengal.. Same Crimson Queen. Anyways, got my money back.. Bought an Orangeola instead.. From another nursery.
